Relevansi Bahasa Gaul terhadap Ketepatan Bahasa Indonesia Baku pada Mahasiswa Prodi Antropologi
Abstract
The development of social media and the dynamics of communication among the younger generation have led to an increase in the use of slang among university students. This phenomenon not only occurs in informal interactions but has also begun to penetrate academic contexts, raising concerns about the appropriateness of standard Indonesian. This study aims to examine the use of slang among students in the Anthropology Education Study Program at Medan State University and its impact on the use of standard Indonesian. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with six students selected purposively. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the use of slang is influenced by the environment of friends, social media, identity needs, and situational context. Students generally have contextual awareness in language, but slang is still used in formal situations. The use of slang has a dual impact: it creates more relaxed communication, but also has the potential to reduce the appropriateness of standard Indonesian in academic contexts.
