Abstract

The development of social media has opened up unlimited space for public expression, but has also given rise to the phenomenon of toxic language that threatens norms of politeness. This study analyzes netizens' toxic remarks in TikTok comments directed at Azizah Salsha, a public figure who has been the target of massive cyberbullying. The purpose of this study is to identify forms of violations of Geoffrey Leech's principles of politeness contained in these comments and to describe the dominant categories of toxic language. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a content analysis method. Data were collected through documentation of screenshots of public comments on the TikTok platform related to Azizah Salsha's content. The analysis was conducted by classifying each comment into Leech's maxims: tact, acceptance, generosity, humility, agreement, and sympathy. The results show that all data contain violations of politeness principles, with violations of the maxims of generosity and sympathy being the most dominant. Forms of toxic language found include physical insults, negative labeling based on social status, sexualization, and demeaning comments. This study concludes that social media comment spaces have become an arena for systematic language production that violates norms of politeness and has the potential to cause serious psychological impacts on the target subjects.
