Abstract

Digital technologies and multimodal communication continue changing the way EFL speaking is learned and taught. This contemporary review attempts to collate recent literature in digital pedagogy and multimodal literacies to determine the extent to which new technologies assist in EFL speaking skills development. The literature review indicates that mobile applications, AI feedback mechanisms, and online speaking classrooms remove the barriers to the development of speaking skills as learners are provided with the required autonomy to work on their speaking fluency and confidence. The literature also indicates that learners are more motivated to use voice, gestures, and images in presentations to achieve a greater purpose and meaning in presentations designed for digital storytelling and videos. The literature indicates that EFL speaking pedagogy has a number of gaps, including the assessment of multimodal speaking, the feedback AI, and the pedagogical practices that are digital and multimodal. This review has identified the gaps and aims to support efforts to address the gaps. Keywords: digital pedagogy, EFL speaking, multimodal literacies, literature review.
