The Effect of Using Duolingo Application on The Students’ Vocabulary Improvement of German Language at A1 Level
Abstract
Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect of foreign language learning since it supports the development of all language competencies. However, many beginners still struggle to build adequate vocabulary due to insufficient practice and the use of less engaging learning methods. This study aims to explore how the Duolingo application influences the vocabulary development of A1-level German learners. This research employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design in the form of a one-group pretest–posttest model. The participants consisted of 30 students from the German Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan, selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered through pretest and posttest instruments and analyzed using descriptive as well as inferential statistical methods. The results reveal a clear improvement in students’ vocabulary scores after the implementation of Duolingo, indicating its effectiveness as a learning tool. The application’s features, including repetitive exercises, gamification elements, and flexible access, help strengthen vocabulary retention and increase learners’ motivation. Furthermore, the use of digital learning media encourages greater student participation and fosters independent learning habits. In conclusion, Duolingo has a positive effect on enhancing German vocabulary mastery among A1 students and can serve as an alternative medium in language instruction. Despite some limitations, such as the small sample size and the absence of a control group, this study highlights the potential of integrating digital technology to create a more engaging and efficient learning process.
