Makna Simbolis dalam Cerita Rakyat Putri Andam Dewi
Abstract
One of the literatures that have imaginative elements is folktale. The symbol that tell the moral value is shown by imaginative elements. It relates to the storyline and can help reader to understand the intrinsic elements. This study is intended to describes the symbolic meaning of imaginative elements in Putri Andam Dewi and it relations to the intrinsic elements and the story’s moral value. This study use qualitative method. Putri Andam Dewi folktale use as source to this study. The data was published by Balai Bahasa Sumatera Utara and other relevant literatures. This study comes wit a result that shows that there are imaginative elements in characters and plots of Putri Andam Dewi, which are (1) Burung Garuda, (2) Sutan Gambang Patuanan, (3) The victory of Sutan Gambang Patuanan, (4) The curse towards Putri Andam Dewi, and (5) The transformation of the holes where Burung Garuda’s head was kept. The imaginative elements work as a symbol and have a meaning, which are (1) Symbol of challenge and danger, (2) Symbol of an ideal leadership, (3) Symbol of goodness fights evil, (4) Symbol of punishment, and (5) Symbol of bad memories. It summarize that the imaginative elements of Putri Andam Dewi have a meaning and related to the intrinsic elements.
